Accelerometer Paper Published!
My paper titled "Characterization and Testing of a Micro-g Whispering Gallery Mode Optomechanical Accelerometer" is now published in IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology!
This work follows on from my Ph.D. where I was using optical whispering gallery modes (WGM) to detect and cool the motion of the WGM cavity itself (it's a silica sphere attached to a cantilever which flops up and down like a plank). Since we can detect the thermal motion (vibrations that persist even for solids due to fluctuation-dissipation theorem!) it means we can DEFINITELY detect driven motion such as acceleration that causes the cantilever to bend.
It's a wonderfully simple system following the rules of F=MA=-KX
Although I started testing this system in the last month of my Ph.D in 2016, we took further data during our prototype development year as well as waiting for the patent to be filed. The prototype paper is now being prepared.
